Is Goodbye June a Christmas movie, or a movie that simply has Christmas in it? I’m not sure – but what I do know is that you won’t stream a more tragically beautiful film this festive season. It’s quite a choice to drop a film that follows a dying woman’s last days on Christmas Eve, but I can see why Netflix made the decision. If anything, the timing drives home…
The final season of Stranger Things has officially kicked off on Netflix, with four episodes available now, with the remaining four coming later. Aside from what you may have missed in the first set of episodes, the new series has been breaking viewership records on Netflix, as expected. Stranger Things began as an unlikely sleeper hit way back in 2016 and has since become one of the most popular shows on TV, and everyone wants to see how it ends. (We have our theories.) As it happens, there’s another popular genre show that’s also getting ready to air its final…
Ads are everywhere on streaming services as companies come to realize that the old cable model of selling commercial space to make money was actually a pretty good model. For consumers and subscribers, it means higher prices and more advertisements before, during, and after titles. Even if you pay more money to go ad-free, you’re still likely to see sponsored content or recommendations from the streamer that are simply ads in disguise. The future looks dim. Ads are only going to get more intrusive and insidious, and a couple of big companies in Netflix and Amazon are leading the charge.…
In a new paper that studies tool-use in large language model (LLM) agents, researchers at Google and UC Santa Barbara have developed a framework that enables agents to make more efficient use of tool and compute budgets. The researchers introduce two new techniques: a simple "Budget Tracker" and a more comprehensive framework called "Budget Aware Test-time Scaling." These techniques make agents explicitly aware of their remaining reasoning and tool-use allowance. As AI agents rely on tool calls to work in the real world, test-time scaling has become less about smarter models and more about controlling cost and latency. For enterprise leaders and…

On paper, Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max is a bigger swing than the annual “new chip, slightly better camera” refresh we’ve seen for the past few years. It sports a redesigned chassis that’s meant to both improve cooling and make room for a larger battery, a jump to the A19 Pro, a revamped camera setup and more. The question is, then, is it worth upgrading from the iPhone 15 Pro Max? While we’re yet to go hands-on with Apple’s latest top-end iPhone, here’s how the iPhone 17 Pro Max compares to the iPhone 15 Pro Max on paper. We’ll be…

The Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) recently released what it calls its most powerful family of models yet, Olmo 3. But the company kept iterating on the models, expanding its reinforcement learning (RL) runs, to create Olmo 3.1.The new Olmo 3.1 models focus on efficiency, transparency, and control for enterprises. Ai2 updated two of the three versions of Olmo 2: Olmo 3.1 Think 32B, the flagship model optimized for advanced research, and Olmo 3.1 Instruct 32B, designed for instruction-following, multi-turn dialogue, and tool use. Amazon has quietly removed its recently launched feature, AI-generated video recaps, after it bungled key story details of the Fallout series on Prime Video. The feature was supposed to make catching up on the next season easier by analyzing plot points and turning them into a short video narrated by an AI voice. Instead, it got basic facts wrong, confusing both longtime fans and people just discovering the show. Where the AI recaps went wrong Fallout’s season one recap was where viewers first noticed something was off. The AI confidently claimed that one of The Ghoul’s flashbacks took place in…
