OpenAI experiment finds that sparse models could give AI builders the tools to debug neural networks
OpenAI researchers are experimenting with a new approach to designing neural networks, with the aim of making AI models easier to understand, debug, and govern. Sparse models can provide enterprises with a better understanding of how these models make decisions. Understanding how models choose to respond, a big selling point of reasoning models for enterprises, can provide a level of trust for organizations when they turn to AI models for insights. The method called for OpenAI scientists and researchers to look at and evaluate models not by analyzing post-training performance, but by adding interpretability or understanding through sparse circuits.OpenAI notes that much…
Illustration by Tag Hartman-Simkins / Futurism. Source: Roy Rochlin / Getty Images While you were busy wasting your time listening to podcasts and doomscrolling on your phone, one of America’s leading AI overlords was educating himself by talking to Nazis. This was the startling admission made by Alex Karp, cofounder and CEO of the software company Palantir, a company that’s come under increasingly heavy scrutiny for its growing role as a provider of AI-powered surveillance technology to the military and government. In an interview with podcaster Molly O’Shea published this week, Karp, who has Jewish heritage, was discussing German culture…
The upcoming Poco Pad M1 was certified in October and spotted in the Geekbench AI database earlier this month, and today purported renders showcasing it have been leaked alongside its specs. The tablet is said to have a 12.1-inch 120Hz IPS LCD screen with 1600×2560 resolution, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 12,000 mAh battery with support for 33W wired charging. There is a lot of enterprise data trapped in PDF documents. To be sure, gen AI tools have been able to ingest and analyze PDFs, but accuracy, time and cost have been less than ideal. New technology from Databricks could change that. The company this week detailed its "ai_parse_document" technology, now integrated with Databricks' Agent Bricks platform. The technology addresses a critical bottleneck in enterprise AI adoption: Approximately 80% of enterprise knowledge remains locked in PDFs, reports and diagrams that AI systems struggle to accurately process and understand."It's a common assumption that parsing PDFs is a solved problem, but in reality,…
C. Scott Brown / Android AuthorityTL;DR Google Play is introducing new “Where to watch” cards for media in its search results. You can quickly see which streaming apps offer a show, and install any you’re missing. Streaming media was supposed to be the next great evolution in home entertainment, and while in many ways it is, we’ve also seen it introduce nearly as many problems as it’s solved. One of the biggest has simply been keeping track of what’s available where — while some content is locked down tightly to one streaming platform, there’s also a ton of it that’s…
Researchers at Google Cloud and UCLA have proposed a new reinforcement learning framework that significantly improves the ability of language models to learn very challenging multi-step reasoning tasks. Supervised Reinforcement Learning (SRL) reformulates problem-solving as a sequence of logical “actions,” providing rich learning signals during the training process. This approach enables smaller models to learn complex problems that were previously out of reach for other common training techniques. Experiments show that SRL not only excels on math reasoning benchmarks but also generalizes effectively to agentic software engineering tasks.SRL is a versatile training framework that can elevate smaller and less expensive models…
Baron reiterated his unwavering belief in Musk’s companies. Ron Baron does not expect to sell my personal Tesla or SpaceX shares in my lifetime. 65% of his personal wealth is tied to Musk’s ventures (40% in Tesla, 25% in SpaceX, and the rest in related funds like xAI). Baron highlighted Baron Capital’s has made over $12 billion from investing in Musk’s ecosystem since 2014. $8 billion from Tesla from a $400 million investment in 2014–2016. $4 billion from SpaceX from 2017 and $400 million from other Musk ventures. Baron described Musk not as a traditional industrialist like Rockefeller, Carnegie, Ford,…

Complacency, rather than bad hardware, is the cause of several PC slowdowns. Your system can accumulate background services, telemetry data, and temporary files, causing performance to degrade quietly. Some of the common cleaners we use aren’t very effective, so I took the opposite route: using Linux tools to fix Windows. This is one of the habits I’ve carried over from years of using Linux. These cross-platform tools, born out of core Linux philosophy, are minimal, ruthlessly efficient, and transparent. Surprisingly, they worked better than I expected—giving me leaner performance and none of the bloat common in most Windows apps. BleachBit…
In its quest to beef up the feature set of its RCS-powered Messages application for Android, Google appears to now be beta testing a new @mentions texting function — at least for a small subset of software beta testers. Over on the r/GoogleMessages subreddit, a user by the name of aniruddhdodiya has shared screenshots of the feature in action on a Pixel 10, with a small tip appearing on-screen that reads “Try @ to get their attention,” followed by “They’ll see @mentions even if their notifications are muted.” In its current state in version 20251103_00_RC00 beta of Google Messages, the…
