Nvidia announced Thursday it’s partnering with EPRI, a power industry R&D organization, to use AI to solve problems facing the electrical grid. Perhaps ironically, the issues are largely caused by rising power demand from AI itself. The Open Power AI Consortium, which includes a number of electrical utilities and tech companies, says it will use what are known as domain-specific AI models to devise new ways to tackle problems that the power industry is predicted to face in the coming years. The models will be open sourced and available to researchers across academia and industry. The power industry is facing surging…

TechOpenAI’s New Video App Is Jaw-Dropping (for Better and Worse)Mike Isaac and Eli Tan | The New York Times ($)”After we spent less than a day with the app, what became clear to us was that Sora had gone beyond being an AI-video generation app. Instead, it is, in effect, a social network in disguise; a clone of TikTok down to its user interface, algorithmic video suggestions, and ability to follow and interact with friends.”FutureUs Jobs Market Yet to Be Seriously Disrupted by AI, Finds Yale StudyDan Milmo | The Guardian”Analysis by Yale University’s Budget Lab found there had been…

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test. Microsoft’s Windows 11 has had its fair share of ups and downs since its 2021 release. Heralded as a new era for the operating system, it’s seen plenty of updates since launch, even before Copilot AI arrived. With Windows 10 now in its End of Life phase (which means it is no longer supported by Microsoft), more users will be encouraged to update, and the good news is that…

Snowflake, Salesforce, dbt Labs and more than a dozen other technology companies announced Tuesday they will create a universal standard for how business data is defined and shared across platforms — solving what executives call AI's most fundamental bottleneck. The Open Semantic Interchange (OSI) initiative brings together fierce competitors who have concluded that inconsistent data definitions across enterprise systems block AI scalability. The effort includes backing from BlackRock and participation from companies including Alation, Atlan, Blue Yonder, Cube, Hex, Honeydew, Mistral AI, Omni, RelationalAI, Select Star, Sigma, and ThoughtSpot. Together, they will establish the first vendor-neutral specification for semantic metadata —…

From one angle, the fact that 8K is in a holding pattern doesn’t make sense. The technology isn’t new anymore. The first commercial 8K TVs shipped in 2018, and with prices gradually coming down, there should be more and more demand for native 8K movies and TV shows. It’s not like studios lack the means of converting titles to that resolution or shooting in it, either — they can already shoot in 12K if they want maximum futureproofing and most have the budget for it as well. 8K should hypothetically be everywhere by now, but it isn’t. So what gives?…

Your best data science team just spent six months building a model that predicts customer churn with 90% accuracy. It’s sitting on a server, unused. Why? Because it’s been stuck in a risk review queue for a very long period of time, waiting for a committee that doesn’t understand stochastic models to sign off. This isn’t a hypothetical — it’s the daily reality in most large companies. In AI, the models move at internet speed. Enterprises don’t. Every few weeks, a new model family drops, open-source toolchains mutate and entire MLOps practices get rewritten. But in most companies, anything touching…

OpenAI’s biggest advertising push yet depicts users leveraging ChatGPT in highly produced, intended-to-be-relatable everyday moments. The only problem? Consumer research shows the effort doesn’t correlate to impact at all.  An ad titled “Dish” shows a young man attempting to impress his date with a home cooked meal by way of a cutesy prompt — “I need a recipe that says ‘I like you, but want to play it cool.’” Another, dubbed “Pull Up,” shows another young man struggling through a pull up bar exercise after prompting the bot to help him feel stronger. Debuted during NFL Primetime, the ads are…

There have been lots of trends in the TV/Audio market this year, as always. Off the top of my head you could pick wired headphones, party speakers, bigger TVs and the increased interest in lifestyle projectors. It’s always difficult, at least for me, to figure out whether these are just ‘trends’ or whether there is real-world experience backing them up. Take lifestyle projectors, for example. More AV brands are launching portable, convenient models, offering an experience you can scale to your needs and requirements of your home. But are they increasing in popularity, or, is do brands want you to…

The season 2 finale of Peacemaker, “Full Nelson,” just dropped on HBO Max, and the consensus is that it was…fine. Initial fan ratings on sites like IMDb are well below what they were for prior episodes, if still respectable, and I can see where those reviewers are coming from. The finale has some issues. But before we get into that, I’d like to celebrate a very successful season of TV that invigorated my interest in superhero shows, which is no small feat considering how many have worn me down over the past several years. How has Peacemaker managed to stay…
