A number of startups are racing to make vehicle inspections faster, easier, and cheaper. Self Inspection, a startup based in San Diego, thinks it has them all beat with its AI-powered service — and now it has convinced outside investors. Self Inspection, founded in 2021, is set to announce Thursday it’s raised $3 million in a seed round co-led by Costanoa Ventures and DVx Ventures, the firm run by former Tesla president Jon McNeill. At the turn of the 20th century, Korbinian Brodmann released one of the most consequential brain maps ever. By studying the humps, grooves, layers, and cells of the cortex—the outermost layer of the brain—he divided the wrinkly tissue into 52 distinct areas.Brodmann’s map was based solely on microscopic images of the brain. Since then, neuroscientists have added a variety of other data types, including high-resolution brain scans, neuron connectivity, and gene expression. In 2016, the human cortex map received a seminal update including multiple datasets. It defined 180 “universal” areas in the human cerebral cortex—far more than Brodmann’s map—many of…

To put it mildly, One UI 8 hasn’t exactly been the most exciting update Samsung has rolled out. Unlike previous versions, this iteration feels more like a steady, incremental update rather than a bold leap forward. In other words, there aren’t many standout features that make you go “wow.” Yet even in a release that feels a bit muted, One UI 8 still offers genuinely useful features worth noticing. They may not make headlines, but they quietly enhance your day-to-day experience. From multitasking improvements to smarter AI tools and stronger privacy controls, these features are worth exploring if you want…

I get the impression that a lot more people are thinking about web browser privacy than they did a decade ago. I don’t have a survey at hand, but considering how widespread news and advice pieces are about the topic — and how often browser makers themselves tout privacy features — there must be some groundswell of awareness. It’s also difficult to ignore the consequences of weak privacy, since pretending that it doesn’t matter will result in obnoxious advertising at best, and a compromised device or identity at worst. It’s actually taken for granted these days that a web browser…

A recent poll by the Pew Research Center found that the majority of US adults think that artificial intelligence will “worsen people’s ability to think creatively,” while half say the tech will deteriorate our ability to form meaningful relationships. And now, according to the center’s latest poll, it turns out that it’s not just Americans quickly becoming distrustful and disillusioned with the tech — much of the rest of the world is growing deeply concerned about AI as well. According to the poll, which was conducted in the spring of this year, a significant proportion of people across 25 countries…

Spotify has been spotted developing a “SongDNA” feature that would allow users to discover music through the credits — the writers, collaborators, vocalists, engineers, lyricists, producers, composers, and others who worked on a given track or album. The feature was discovered in the app’s code by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, who was able to generate screenshots of how SongDNA would appear in the app. Based on her findings, SongDNA would introduce a visual experience where you could essentially navigate through the credits, see how people were connected to each other, and explore their various works. For instance, Wong showed…
