Streaming services are getting more expensive all the time, with Netflix raising its prices again just this past March. It’s getting to the point where it doesn’t make sense to keep up with all of these subscriptions. Happily, there are plenty of free streaming services out there that make better-than-expected substitutes. That includes Tubi, the best free streaming service you’re not using.
Full disclosure: there is a lot of chaff to sort through on these services; when the price is free, sometimes you get what you pay for. But there’s also a lot of high-quality stuff if you know where to look.
The Descent is one of the most thrilling films you’ll ever see without paying
You can watch this classic for free this very moment
For instance, Tubi is currently hosting The Descent, a 2005 horror film more thrilling than anything that’s been released in 2026 so far. Set in the mountains of Appalachia, The Descent is about six women who descend into a cave system intending to explore it. It’s basically an extreme vacation activity, but things turn serious after a tunnel collapses and the women find themselves stuck inside. Normally this would be fine, because local authorities are supposed to come find them if anything goes wrong…but then the thrill-seeking Juno (Natalie Mendoza) admits that she purposely led the group off the beaten path into an unexplored cave system, so no one knows where they are.
That by itself is a horrifying scenario, made worse when one of the women, Holly (Nora-Jane Noone), falls in a hole and breaks her leg. So now the women not only have to try and find their way out of an unexplored cave system, they have to do it while transporting an injured person. And without spoiling too much, there may be things living down here that no one expected to encounter.
The movie includes some interpersonal drama too. The main character, Sarah (Shauna Macdonald), undertakes this cave trip about a year after losing both her husband and daughter in a car accident. This is very much not the healing vacation she needs right now, and being in such close proximity to old friends like Juno reopens some old wounds. This element adds a layer to The Descent that elevates it above (or below) your average scary movie.
Descending into what?
Come for the high-stakes thrills, stay for the dark night of the soul
There is a version of The Descent that just focuses on the blood and the gore and the busted limbs and the things that go bump in the deep dark under the earth. But this movie, written and directed by Neil Marshall, gets at something a little deeper.
Again, I won’t spoil anything, but once the women have been down in the cave system for a while, and some of them start getting hurt or worse, and their lives hang in the balance, the rules that govern them in their day-to-day lives stop applying. They need to do whatever they have to do to survive, and they’re free to act on impulses they suppress in the clear light of day.
So the descent in The Descent, then, isn’t just a descent into a cave system, but into the deeper, darker depths of the human heart, where we find we’re capable of doing disquieting things that we would never contemplate up in the world above.
That sounds more pretentious than it comes off in the movie, which is gripping from start to finish. But by probing those deeper questions, Marshall makes a movie that lingers with you after you see it, rather than evaporating the moment you find something else to distract you. And again, you can experience this existential thrill for the low price of nothing.
The legacy of The Descent
Still descending all these years later
The Descent ended up making $57 million at the box office on a budget of just $7 million, a clear success story. A sequel, The Descent Part 2, did come out in 2009, but Marshall neither wrote nor directed it, and it’s widely considered a major step down. It is also on Tubi, if you’re interested.
The Descent can stand up to any modern horror movie made today, and there have been a lot of good ones recently. It’s also a visually absorbing film. The cave sets are extremely convincing, and the inky blackness of the photography leaves you nervously twiddling your fingers, knowing that anything could jump out of that darkness at any time.
I can’t believe these movies are free on Tubi
These are the best free movies I found on Tubi, but there are heaps more for you to search through.
Thrilling, free, and available to watch right now
There’s plenty of reason to be excited for the horror genre nowadays, with some exciting new releases just around the corner. But those releases aren’t likely to be free, at least not for a long time.
Or maybe Hollywood will have to make some exceptions, because when there are great thrillers like The Descent available to watch on free streaming services like Tubi, you have to wonder how much longer people will pay exorbitant ticket prices to see a new movie, regardless of how good it is. For those who want to save their money, there are other entertaining horror films to watch without even having to leave Tubi.
