With macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple is bringing an end to its support for Macs with Intel processors. The latest version of Cupertino’s desktop operating system will only support devices with the M and A-series chips. Like iOS 27, the main new addition is the standalone Siri AI app and updated Apple Intelligence features.

The latter supports personal context, system-wide apps support and Visual Intelligence, which recognizes items on your screen. Apple is also bringing “Type to Siri,” which allows you to enter prompts directly into Spotlight search, which has a new interface.

The new Siri app will be available on Macs with M1 chip (and newer) as well as the MacBook Neo (A18 Pro). However, the more powerful on-device Apple Intelligence features and customization options will only work on Macs with the M3 chip (or newer) with at least 12GB of unified memory.

There are several other additions that are worth mentioning. Apple claims Golden Gate features system-level improvements. These include quicker AirDrop transfers, faster file browsing and speedier loading in Safari.

On the visual side, Apple’s Liquid Glass design is scaled down, ensuring readability across the OS as well as uniformity to aspects like toolbars and menu items.

There’s a slider option that lets you control the effect’s opacity across the entire UI. Apple also confirmed support for 5K/120Hz ultrawide displays.
