A price cut on open-ear buds that clip on rather than plug in is the kind of deal worth grabbing before the price climbs back.

These are the Huawei FreeClip 2, now £134.99 instead of £179.99 on Amazon, a saving of £45 that brings a design most brands still treat as a premium novelty down to a far more reasonable price.

Save 25% on the earbuds that don’t go in your ears at all

Save a solid 25% right now on these clever earbuds that skip the in-ear design altogether and clip on instead.

At £134.99, the FreeClip 2 undercuts sealed flagships like the Apple AirPods Pro, the Sony WF-1000XM5 and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds, buying comfort-first engineering instead of noise isolation for a fraction of what those bigger names charge.

The C-bridge clip is built from skin-friendly liquid silicone and a shape-memory alloy that sits entirely outside the ear canal, so there is no tip to wedge in and no pressure that builds up over a long day of wear.

Each earbud weighs just 5.1g, light enough that Huawei markets the Comfort Bean shape as 11 percent smaller than the previous generation, and that difference is the kind you only notice when you forget the earbuds are even in.

Sound comes from a redesigned 10.8mm dual-diaphragm driver that Huawei says delivers twice the volume and air displacement of the last model, directing audio straight into the ear through a reverse sound-wave system that keeps leakage low in quiet rooms.

Calls are handled by a 3-mic system with noise cancellation that filters out background chatter automatically, useful for anyone taking calls on a busy street or in a shared office, and head motion controls let you nod or shake to answer calls instead.

Battery life stretches to 38 hours with the wireless charging case, and the IP57 rating means sweat, rain and dust are no longer a reason to leave them at home before a run or a walk in bad weather.

Bluetooth 6.0 multipoint means the FreeClip 2 can stay connected to a phone and a laptop at once and switch automatically between them, while either earbud fits either ear thanks to automatic left and right detection built into the case.

Glasses, hats and earrings have always been the enemy of a good pair of earbuds, and the FreeClip 2 is built specifically around that problem, with a C-bridge design that clips outside the ear rather than fighting for space inside it.

The Huawei FreeClip 2 offers improved sound from the first FreeClip, but there are some elements that still hold it back from being the pick of the clip-on earbuds

    • Comfortable to wear for long periods

    • Smaller charging case

    • New Huawei Audio app

    • Controls aren’t fantastic in all scenarios

    • Not the best-sounding clip-on earbuds available

    • Getting the buds back into charger is fiddly
