Canada’s largest Canadian energy project now is the Churchill Falls–Gull Island package in Labrador. It is nearly $70 billion and the largest clean-energy investment in North American history. This will be about 14,000 MW of clean power across the package. It is the existing Churchill Falls plus new hydro and wind nearly tripling Churchill Falls. It is roughly 23,000 construction jobs, and about $31 billion in GDP contribution through the early 2040s.
Churchill Falls upgrades are a refit of the existing station’s 11 units, expected to raise installed capacity by about 23.5 percent, or roughly 1,275 MW. Federal material also refers to a further expansion of up to about 2,500 MW. Existing capacity is about 5,428 MW.
Gull Island is a new plant on the Churchill River, downstream of Churchill Falls and about 100 km southwest of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. It is planned at about 2,250–2,700 MW. 2,700 MW and six units. Estimated capital cost about $29 billion. Hydro-Québec is buildin it. Joint venture ownership is framed as 60 percent NL Hydro / 40 percent Hydro-Québec.
