Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 to be thinner and lighter

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Flip8 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold8 next summer, and today a report from its home country of Korea has some intriguing details about the former.

The Flip8 will allegedly be at least 10% thinner and lighter than its predecessor. That would make it at most 6mm thin when opened, 12mm thick when closed, and around 170g in weight. This is going to be key to Samsung achieving 10% better sales for the Flip8 and Fold8 compared to the Flip7 and Fold7. The company has apparently set a sales target of 6.7 million units for the upcoming foldables.

The plan to make the Z Flip8 thinner and lighter comes as a consequence of the fact that the Flip7’s sales have been relatively weak. And it all makes sense of course, especially considering how Samsung’s Chinese competitors have all focused on thinness and lightness for their foldables in recent times.

Samsung is also allegedly concerned about Apple entering the foldable fray in 2026. While this might just ‘expand the pie’ of overall foldable device sales, Apple could also lure some Samsung customers, and one of the ways in which the Korean company is trying to prevent that is making the Flip8 more appealing.

And it’s about time too – this year, the Fold7 got significantly thinner and lighter than its predecessor, while the Flip7 stayed much more similar to the Flip6. So, if this report is accurate, next year the Flip will basically receive a similar treatment to what the Fold enjoyed in 2025.
