The oft-rumored ban of DJI drones in the US has now become reality, but the US government hasn’t just banned sales of DJI drones. Instead, all foreign-made drones and their components are now banned in the country. Obviously, DJI is the most impacted in the consumer market, though. The FCC says several security agencies have determined that drones and their critical components produced in foreign countries pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the US. Today, based on an Executive Branch national security determination, the FCC has added foreign-produced UAS (drones) and foreign-produced UAS critical component parts to…

Astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have imaged the largest protoplanetary disk ever observed circling a young star. For the first time in visible light, Hubble has revealed the disk is unexpectedly chaotic and turbulent, with wisps of material stretching much farther above and below the disk than astronomers have seen in any similar system. Strangely, more extended filaments are only visible on one side of the disk. The findings, which published Tuesday in The Astrophysical Journal, mark a new milestone for Hubble and shed light on how planets may form in extreme environments, as NASA’s missions lead humanity’s exploration…

The feature was limited to tablets at first, but it soon expanded to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and other phones.Initially, I thought I would use this all the time, but I soon realized that the issue was with the multi-window mode itself, and how it displayed a tiny part of both apps and made using either of them clunkier. So I forgot about app pairs for…

As generative AI models grow more powerful, their energy use is becoming a serious bottleneck. A new fully optical generative AI chip could help by running advanced image and video generation tasks at speeds and efficiencies orders of magnitude beyond today’s hardware.Training generative AI models requires an enormous amount of computing power and energy. But as demand explodes, the process of actually running the models to create images, text, or video—known as inference—is quickly becoming an even bigger drain on resources.Video and image generation models are particularly energy intensive. While the efficiency of these models is constantly improving, a 2023…

With the likes of SpaceX rattling off rocket launches seemingly every other day, you could be forgiven for thinking that sending massive vehicles to space had become as easy as baking a cake. But as two rocket failures on December 22 shows, the launch process remains as complex as ever. The first of this week’s two failures came when the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZS-5) aboard its H3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center about 620 miles south-west of Tokyo. The first part of the rocket’s flight looked good, but the second stage engine’s…
