Apple might borrow a camera feature for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max from Oppo and vivo

Teleconverters are all the rage these days in China, with both Oppo and vivo offering them for their high-end imaging flagships. But what about Apple? Well, according to a new rumor from Weibo, the Cupertino company is now evaluating whether or not it should create such an accessory for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, due for release later this year.

Of course, this means no decision has been made yet, but even the fact that Apple is thinking about this is notable. The company isn’t usually very fast to jump on trends like this, famously waiting many years until it adopts technologies pioneered by its competitors. Then the media spin is that Apple wanted the tech to be mature enough, and Apple itself will act as if it invented everything.

The variable aperture main camera is once again said to be in development for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, and this is a perfect example of what we described above – other brands did variable aperture cameras many years ago. And now Apple will “invent” this tech for its fans.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have been rumored to sport a very similar design to their predecessors, perhaps with a transparent back twist (many years after Xiaomi and many others did it too).
