It has been a rocky road for Disney+ series spinoff movie The Mandalorian and Grogu, which didn’t exactly land with audiences in theaters when it was released back in May. The film has ended its theatrical run officially and now has the unfortunate distinction of being the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film of all time, grossing just $342.2 million worldwide, far below the previous record-holder, Solo: A Star Wars Story, which grossed just $393 million worldwide.
Though it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what went wrong with this film, some have speculated that the mere idea of bringing a Disney+ series to the big screen, even one as notable as The Mandalorian, would doom the movie from the outset, as viewers would rather stream the movie at home, in the same place where they watched the original series that this movie spun off from. Star Wars and overall franchise fatigue have also been cited as potential reasons why this movie simply didn’t live up to expectations at the multiplex.
Whatever the reason, it seems likely that Disney is hoping that this movie will get a second wind on streaming and home release, as they have rushed this title to VOD platforms and have also announced several 4K UHD/Blu-ray physical releases as well.
The Mandalorian and Grogu officially hits streaming next week with a physical release in August
The release comes 61 days exactly after the film debuted in theaters
Disney announced this morning that The Mandalorian and Grogu will be available to purchase for $30 on digital platforms like Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Fandango in just one week on Tuesday, July 21. This comes only 61 days after the movie was first released in theaters on May 22, 2026, only one day past the 60-day “blockbuster” theatrical exclusivity window, which is likely an indication that Disney has been hoping to get this on streaming as soon as possible.
The film will also be releasing on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray August 25, with standard editions, a Steelbook special edition, and a premium Beskar Collector’s Edition, which includes the film on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and Digital as well as metal posters and exclusive, limited edition packaging. Preorders for all physical copies of the movie are expected to go live soon.

From Nevarro to Mandalore — how well do you really know Din Djarin and the
Child?
CharactersPlanetsLoreWeaponsSeason Facts
What is the real name of the character fans originally nicknamed ‘Baby Yoda’ in The
Mandalorian?
Correct! The Child’s name is Grogu, revealed in Season 2. The name was
kept secret for a long time to preserve the mystery around the character, and it was Ahsoka Tano who
first sensed and revealed it.
Not quite — the answer is Grogu. While fans called him Baby Yoda due to
his species resemblance, his true name Grogu was revealed in Season 2 by Ahsoka Tano, who sensed it
through the Force.
What is the Mandalorian creed phrase that Din Djarin lives by throughout the series?
Correct! ‘This is the Way’ is the central creed of Din Djarin’s covert,
the Children of the Watch. It reflects their strict dogmatic interpretation of Mandalorian culture and
became one of the most iconic phrases in modern Star Wars.
Not quite — the answer is ‘This is the Way.’ This phrase is the mantra
of Din Djarin’s sect, the Children of the Watch, and it became a cultural phenomenon, repeated widely by
fans and characters alike throughout the series.
What is the name of the nearly indestructible material that Mandalorian armor,
including Din Djarin’s, is traditionally made from?
Correct! Beskar, also called Mandalorian iron, is the legendary alloy
used to forge Mandalorian armor. It can withstand blaster fire and even lightsaber strikes, making it
one of the most prized materials in the galaxy.
Not quite — the correct answer is Beskar, also known as Mandalorian
iron. This rare and sacred alloy is central to Mandalorian culture and identity, capable of deflecting
blaster bolts and even resisting lightsaber blades.
Which former Jedi appears in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, portrayed in live-action
for the first time?
Correct! Ahsoka Tano, previously seen only in animation, made her
live-action debut in Season 2 played by Rosario Dawson. The appearance was a massive moment for Star
Wars fans and directly led to her own spin-off series.
Not quite — it was Ahsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson, who made her
live-action debut in Season 2. Originally appearing in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, her
appearance in The Mandalorian was a landmark moment for the franchise.
On which desert planet does Din Djarin pick up his first bounty target in the very
first episode of The Mandalorian?
Correct! The first episode sends Din Djarin to Arvala-7, a harsh desert
world where he encounters Kuiil and ultimately finds Grogu. Arvala-7 is a new planet introduced in the
series and not previously seen in Star Wars lore.
Not quite — the answer is Arvala-7. Though it may look similar to
Tatooine, Arvala-7 is a brand-new planet introduced in The Mandalorian’s pilot episode, where Din tracks
down his mysterious high-value target — who turns out to be Grogu.
Who plays the villain Moff Gideon, the primary antagonist across the first two
seasons of The Mandalorian?
Correct! Giancarlo Esposito, widely known for his role as Gus Fring in
Breaking Bad, plays Moff Gideon with chilling authority. His character wielded the Darksaber and served
as the central threat to Din Djarin and Grogu throughout the first two seasons.
Not quite — Moff Gideon is played by Giancarlo Esposito, famous for his
iconic villain roles including Gus Fring in Breaking Bad. His cold, calculating portrayal of the
Imperial remnant officer made him one of the most compelling antagonists in recent Star Wars history.
What is the Darksaber, and who originally created it according to Star Wars lore?
Correct! The Darksaber was created by Tarre Vizsla, the first
Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order. It became a symbol of leadership over Mandalore, and
whoever wins it in combat is considered the rightful ruler of the Mandalorian people.
Not quite — the Darksaber was created by Tarre Vizsla, the first
Mandalorian Jedi. Its flat, black blade and unique hum make it iconic, and in Mandalorian culture it
represents the right to rule — which is why Moff Gideon’s possession of it is so significant.
In Season 3, Din Djarin undertakes a pilgrimage to redeem himself in the eyes of his
covert. Which location must he visit to be redeemed?
Correct! To be redeemed after removing his helmet, Din Djarin must bathe
in the Living Waters beneath the mines of Mandalore — specifically beneath the ruins of the city of
Sundari. This journey drives much of the plot of Season 3.
Not quite — the answer is the Living Waters beneath Sundari on
Mandalore. Din Djarin removed his helmet and was considered an apostate by his covert’s creed, so
bathing in these sacred waters was the only path to his redemption and reinstatement as a Mandalorian in
good standing.

Of course, though the initial digital and physical releases of The Mandalorian and Grogu are exciting for fans, I’d guess most people who enjoyed The Mandalorian TV series are waiting for this film to come to Disney+. And while it will probably be a bit of a wait, it seems likely that Disney will be pushing this release out as soon as they can if this rushed VOD release is any indication.
Though conventional wisdom might suggest that Disney will wait until after the physical 4K UHD/ Blu-ray release to set the Disney+ premiere date for this movie, several recent films have bucked this trend, most recently Project Hail Mary, which debuted on Amazon Prime Video before its August 4K UHD/Blu-ray release.
Only time will tell when Disney will release this title on Disney+ but my guess is that we’ll see it before the end of the summer, perhaps even as early as August 21, which would be in line with the typical 30-day VOD exclusivity window for high profile releases.
