Cisco Foundation AI has announced Antares, a small language model (SLM) named after the brightest star in the Scorpius constellation. Just as the Antares star is bright because it is a binary star, so Cisco’s Antares family currently comprises two models: Antares-350M and Antares-1B.  Both are SLM open-weight models available on Hugging Face. Data from the Earth-orbiting U.S.-India NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite’s L-band radar was used to produce an image of Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja — a mountaintop in East Antarctica — poking out amid a stream of ice flowing northeast to the ocean. The obstruction causes stresses in the ice, heavily fracturing the surrounding surfaces with deep cracks, called crevasses, which show as sharp green lines in the image. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order requiring the Department of War to develop new rules for mapping and securing critical defense supply chains, including the software, services and technology used in national security systems. While primarily focused on domestic sourcing of critical materials, the executive order contains several provisions relevant to cybersecurity teams, particularly those responsible for software supply chain security, third-party risk and defense contractor compliance.
