Artificial intelligence is rapidly learning to autonomously design and run biological experiments, but the systems intended to govern those capabilities are struggling to keep pace.AI company OpenAI and biotech company Ginkgo Bioworks announced in February 2026 that OpenAI’s flagship model GPT-5 had autonomously designed and run 36,000 biological experiments. It did this through a robotic cloud laboratory, a facility where automated equipment controlled remotely by computers carries out experiments. The AI model proposed study designs, and robots carried them out and fed the data back to the model for the next round. Humans set the goal, and the machines did…

Google this week promoted Chrome 149 to the stable channel with patches for 429 vulnerabilities, a record for a single Chrome refresh. Already exceeding several times the total number of Chrome security fixes released in 2025, the surge in Chrome flaws is likely driven by AI use, which led Google to lower Chrome bug bounties in April. Over 100 of the newly resolved security defects are critical and high-severity issues, most of which are use-after-free and insufficient validation of untrusted input flaws. The most severe of the bugs is CVE-2026-10881 (CVSS score of 9.6), an out-of-bounds read and write weakness…

Netflix is lousy with great historical dramas, so many that some are bound to slip through the cracks. Such was the case with The Dig, a 2021 period piece with a timely message about the power of discovery in the face of immense hardship. Directed by Simon Stone and anchored by great performances from Carey Mulligan and Ralph “Voldemort” Fiennes, The Dig is a terrific, gentle watch that deserves more attention than it got. The story of The Dig Uncovering the secrets of the past in your own backyard The Dig tells the (mostly) true story of the 1939 excavation…
