The home release may have been pushed back

Early this morning, preorders for the Obsession 4K/Blu-ray home release went live on several retailers, including Amazon, Walmart and Barnes and Noble. However, as of 3PM EST on June 1, every single preorder page has been removed. Though these pages were active for several hours and many users on social media reported being able to preorder the film, it looks like if you weren’t fast enough on that preorder button, you simply lost out.

No explanation has been given as to why the preorder pages were pulled, but my guess is that, like the digital release, the physical release of the movie has been pushed back. According to the now-deleted listing pages, the 4K/Blu-ray combo pack was set to release on July 14th, which would have been in line with a 30-day exclusivity window for VOD platforms, had the film actually released this week on digital.

However, since Obsession has officially been pushed back on VOD, it seems likely that the 4K/Blu-ray release has been moved as well. And while it would have been nice to still be able to preorder the movie on disc even with a TBD or placeholder release date, it looks like the film’s distributor wants to halt any further preorders until they have their new home release strategy nailed down.

What should I do if I already preordered Obsession?

You’ll still get your movie, but you might be waiting a little bit longer

If you were one of the lucky ones who were able to preorder this movie before the listings went down, rest assured, you’re almost certainly still going to get your movie. Preorder cancelations are exceptionally rare and, unless something is fundamentally changing about the content of the 4K/Blu-ray combo pack, you can expect to receive your movie when it is available.

However, I wouldn’t hold too tightly to that July 14th release date, as if, as I suspect, a delay is behind the preorder pages’ disappearance, the physical copy of the movie probably won’t be available until August at the earliest.

How will these delays affect the eventual Peacock/Netflix release of Obsession?

It is going to be a long wait for streaming

Because Obsession is a Blumhouse release, the studio’s deal with NBC Universal means that after it (eventually) hits VOD platforms as well as 4K/Blu-Ray, its next stop will be Peacock. It is increasingly looking like August will now be when the film will finally debut for home viewers, which would mean a late 2026 release for Peacock subscribers, perhaps in time for Christmas,

Blumhouse also has a deal that could eventually bring the film to Netflix following its Peacock release, but if that happens, I wouldn’t expect to see it on the service until 2027 at the earliest.

Peacock will stream Lionsgate movies in 2024, including Hunger Games prequel photo 1
