    Obsession streaming date pushed back

Obsession has had a crazy two-week run in theaters, earning over $75 million at the box office on a budget of just under a million dollars. Perhaps even more impressively, the bulk of ticket sales came in during the film’s second week of release, which is very much so against box office trends, especially in horror, and set a new record in the process.

Studio head Jason Blum confirmed the news on X this morning, saying “Obsession is the ONLY wide-release horror film on record to grow in its second weekend at this scale — $22.4M, up 30% over opening.”

Though you might think Blumhouse would be in a rush to get this film out on VOD/streaming as soon as possible given its popularity, Jason Blum spoke to Variety recently and implied that the studio will be waiting a little bit longer before bringing this instant horror classic to the small screen as part of an ongoing trend of longer theatrical windows. Here’s what’s going on:

Obsession will not be releasing on VOD on June 2

The movie will exclusively be in theaters at least a little longer

Before Obsession’s release, it was reported that the horror film was set to hit VOD streaming services on Tuesday, June 2, just two weeks after its initial theatrical release. However, given its performance, that date is likely off the table as Blumhouse, according to Forbes, reportedly has had a system where movies that make under $50 million initially get a 17-day theatrical window that extends that to 31 days once they hit the $50 million milestone.

However, given the record-breaking performance of Obsession, we might be looking at an even longer time between the theatrical release and the film’s streaming debut. Studio head Jason Blum recently told Variety that he doesn’t specifically know how long Obsession will play exclusively in theaters, but implied that an even further extended run beyond Blumhouse’s typical elongated window is possible. The timing of a home release is “big topic of conversation at the moment,” according to Blum, who added that he is a “big believer in a long, consistent theatrical window.”

So while we don’t have a specific update right now as to when Obsession will be able to watch at home (with the lights on, presumably), we’d guess that this new movie won’t be on streaming until at least late July at the earliest, especially if it keeps up its stellar box office performance.

When will Obsession be on Peacock and Netflix?

The film should be free to stream for Peacock subscribers before the end of the year

Because Obsession is a Blumhouse release, the studio’s deal with NBC Universal means that after it hits VOD platforms, it will be free to stream for Peacock subscribers first. If we assume the movie hits VOD in late summer and is exclusive to platforms like Apple TV and Fandango at home for at least 60 days, that means a late 2026 release on Peacock is likely.

Blumhouse also has a deal Netflix that could bring the film to the number one name in streaming following its Peacock release. However, if this movie ends up as part of the studio’s deal with Netflix, we wouldn’t expect it to be available to watch there until 2027 at the earliest.
