Oppo explains how and why it designed the first 50MP 10x camera for the Find X9 Ultra

Oppo has packed so much tech into the Find X9 Ultra that it’s going to take multiple presentations to cover everything. So, the company is getting a head start before tomorrow’s unveiling with this detailed description of the quad camera system.

First, Oppo focuses on 10x optical zoom (230mm). It says that previous devices have attempted it without naming names, but it says that cramming this focal length into a phone came at the cost of “severely limited light intake and low pixel counts”.

So, Oppo developed the world’s first 10x 50MP smartphone camera. It designed a quintuple prism lens, which is only 29mm long – a single prism design would have been 41mm long. This is a complicated design that required Active Optical Alignment during assembly – the process uses high-precision cameras to calibrate the lens, sensor and prism at the factory.

It’s worth it, though. The end result is a bright f/3.5 lens that captures three times as much light as previous 10x telephoto lenses. Then there’s the customized Samsung JNL sensor, which has sensor shift stabilization – stabilization is crucial when shooting at 10x and 20x. Since the JNL sensor has 50MP resolution, it can use in-sensor zoom to reach 20x.

The Oppo Find X9 Ultra has two 200MP cameras. The main module uses the largest 200MP sensor yet, the 1/1.12” Sony Lytia 901. It is paired with an f/1.5 lens and Oppo says that the light gathering ability is comparable to that of 1”-type cameras. In-sensor 2x zoom offers 50MP resolution at close to 50mm focal length.

The 3x telephoto module uses a 1/1.28” sensor and an f/2.2 lens. This one also does 2x in-sensor zoom at 50MP, which allows it to match the 6x 50MP camera of the old Find X8 Ultra. This camera also has a super close focusing distance of just 15cm, so it can do telephoto macro photography too.

Then there is a 50MP ultra-wide camera with a 14mm lens and a wide aperture that allows it to capture 56% more light than the previous generation UW camera.

Finally, a new-generation True Color Camera is a multispectral sensor that has a 95° field of view and 5.5x more dynamic range. This module helps the other cameras to render colors more accurately.

To zoom even further, Oppo has created the Hasselblad Earth Explorer Kit. This includes the Explorer Case, which borrows its design cues from the Hasselblad X2D 100C Earth Explorer Edition. This case allows you to mount 67mm filters or the new teleconverter. Speaking of which, the Hasselblad 300mm Explorer Teleconverter has 16 glass elements arranged in 11 groups. Together, they add a magnification factor of 4.3x on top of the 200MP 3x camera – that’s 300mm or 13x optical zoom. In-sensor zoom can extend that to 690mm or 30x.
