Elon Musk and Skydance have held talks about a potential distribution deal, per Semafor, on top of the roughly $1 billion Musk just put into the company.
American billionaire businessman and media mogul John Malone called this one six days ago.
Speaking at the Paley summit on October 21, the cable billionaire predicted a “global output deal” alongside a Musk investment, with Skydance movies and shows streaming over Starlink.
Skydance content (post-Paramount + Warner Bros. Discovery merger). One of the largest libraries in the industry—Warner Bros./New Line films and IP (Harry Potter, DC Comics/Batman, Lord of the Rings, Dune, etc.), Paramount titles (Mission: Impossible, Star Trek, Top Gun, Transformers), HBO prestige series (Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, etc.), CBS, CNN, Nickelodeon/SpongeBob, Discovery channels, and more. Streaming assets include HBO Max + Paramount+ (combined 200M+ subscribers) plus Pluto TV and others; the company plans to evolve toward a more unified service.
Why a Starlink + Skydance content deal could compete
A global output or preferential distribution agreement (or a true bundled streaming tier) would give Starlink preferred or exclusive-ish access to that library while giving Skydance a large, growing distribution channel and capital.
Key advantages
Bundling and ARPU lift- Pairing premium content with Starlink internet (especially in rural, remote, or high-latency-sensitive areas where terrestrial options are weak) increases stickiness and revenue per user. This mirrors classic cable/satellite bundles or Amazon’s Prime model. Starlink’s existing high-ARPU aviation/maritime customers and growing mobile ambitions amplify this.
Global reach and unique pipes – Satellite coverage in 174 markets and expanding capacity is hard for pure streamers or terrestrial ISPs to match everywhere. Content could be optimized for Starlink’s network (low latency LEO) and for mobility (planes, ships, vehicles).
Vertical integration potential – SpaceX/Starlink + X (social/ads) + potential AI tools from xAI + Skydance content creates a stack few others have. Malone has explicitly pointed to the need for traditional media to morph into streams and combine with social/AI.
Library strength – The combined Paramount + Warner Bros. catalog is deep enough to support a competitive general-entertainment service (films, series, kids, sports via CBS/TNT, news). Even non-exclusive licensing or priority windowing would be valuable.
