Tubi has become a hot spot for horror movie fans like myself. Many big streaming services offer a massive list of horror movies to stream for a scary high subscription fee. However, as an ad-supported platform, Tubi provides users with a wide selection of free horror movies and shows. They even organized them all in the new Terror for Tubi hub, making them easier to find.

    1408 (2007)

    A must-see Stephen King adaptation

Based on the short story by Stephen King, 1408 stars John Cusack as a skeptical novelist who checks into a supposedly haunted hotel room for his next book. He quickly finds himself unable to leave the room and haunted by terrifying visions, blurring the lines between nightmare and reality.

Fans of The Shining will enjoy this underrated psychological horror film. Rather than a man turning against his family, 1408 shows a man confronting an unrelenting entity that challenges his beliefs and forces him to confront his tragic past. If you thought the Overlook Hotel was terrifying, just wait until you check into Room 1408.

    The Descent (2005)

    Face your deepest fears

Essentially Alien in a cave, this classic follows a group of thrill-seeking friends who explore a cavern in the mountains, where they encounter a race of bloodthirsty Crawlers. As the group tries to outrun this vicious horde, protagonist Sarah attempts to escape her inescapable grief over the death of her husband and daughter.

All in all, The Descent is more than just another creature feature; it’s a tense, emotional look at how loss and dark secrets can tear people apart. Director Neil Marshall’s horror hit currently holds an 87% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the most iconic horror movies of the 2000s.

    Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)

A prequel with more life than the original

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan had a terrific year in 2016, as he released horror gems like Hush, Before I Wake, and this prequel to the reviled film, Ouija. Set in the 1960s, Origin of Evil follows a family running a fake medium business when they summon a real spirit after adding a Ouija board to their act.

Filmed as if it were made with a retro camera, Flanagan’s period piece pays homage to horror classics like The Exorcist with a story of a family coping with loss that is ultimately destroyed by supernatural forces. As the family dies off one by one, they suspect that someone among them is a witch.

    The Witch (2015)

    A good old-fashioned witch hunt

Long before he directed The Lighthouse, Nosferatu, and Werwulf, director Robert Eggers broke out into the film industry with his movie, The Witch. Set in New England during the 1600s, this folk horror film follows a Puritan family that moves to a house near the woods, where they fear a Satanic force dwells. As the family dies off one by one, the family suspects that someone among them is a witch.

Stepping away from tired jump scares, The Witch elevates itself with its unnerving atmosphere and several strong performances from its cast, particularly Ralph Ineson and a young Anya Taylor-Joy. It’s not the witch that’s most terrifying, but the people who succumb to their fear of the unknown.
