Maps can show more than just where things are—they can also show how things change. New maps of artificial light reveal a planet that has been reshaping its nights through patterns of brightening and dimming. The maps are based on a recent analysis of NASA’s Black Marble data, which found that instead of a gradual increase in artificial light at night over the course of nearly a decade, the patterns are much more nuanced. The analysis portrays a world flickering with industrial booms and busts, construction, and blackouts, as well as more gradual shifts, such as policy-driven retrofits. NASA’s Black…

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech A stunning new image captured by the James Webb Space Telescope shows a nearby galaxy bursting with light at its center, revealing the distinct but optically invisible structure that underpins the sprawling realm. Known as Messier 77, or the Squid Galaxy, it’s located in the constellation Cetus some 45 million light-years from Earth. Like our own Milky Way, it takes the form of a barred spiral galaxy, but its center is far more luminous. That’s because it’s dominated by an active galactic nucleus,…

The more streaming, gaming, and audio devices you add to your TV setup, the more remote controls you’ll inevitably have to manage. Eventually, it becomes too much. Your TV screen has its own remote to kick things off, and you might have a gaming console or streaming box with its own remotes. Add a Blu-ray player, turntable, or AV receiver to the mix, and you’ve doubled the number of remote controls in your setup already. If you have a particularly extravagant home theater or listening station, a CD player or a Chromecast could further convolute the experience. The answer might…

Joe Maring / Android AuthorityAI. AI. AI. I’m sure you’re tired of hearing this word over the past couple of years. It is everywhere, slapped onto every feature, every app, every keynote slide, whether it actually makes your phone better or not. And honestly, I’ve felt the same way. Sure, some features are quite useful, but most of the AI features on Android I find to be a gimmick you try once and forget about. One such gimmick, at least in my opinion, has always been on-device AI. Most AI features on our phones still rely on the cloud (or hybrid…

Sonny White and the Casimir Team have created nanostructures to get microwatts of continuous energy (could last centuries or millenia) by leveraging the Casimir force. In Casimr Energy there are fewer virtual particles between plates with a tiny gap which creates a force by having more virtual particles outside it. The first-generation microsparc delivers performance comparable to a small ceramic rechargeable battery or a solar panel no larger than your fingertip – but without the need for external charging or light. They are building multi-layer Casimir chips and using advanced die-stacking to pack up to 100x more power into the…

It’s that time of the year when Trusted Reviews rolls its sleeves and starts testing TVs. Starting from April, it’s usually the time when TVs roll off the production line and into test rooms for a closer look. Samsung’s flagship models have already been looked at, while I have started to look at LG’s G-series OLED (with the C-series coming soon). Sony has announced a couple of its lower-tier sets, while I’ve also started testing at Hisense’s RGB Mini LED screens, and hopefully TCL’s new models will follow suit later in May. But there are two brands I haven’t yet…
