Mike Flanagan changed Carrie’s ending, and it changes everything

When Stephen King’s Carrie was published in 1974, its story of a bullied teenage girl with telekinetic powers ended in tragedy. Carrie White spends her life being abused by her fanatically religious mother and tormented by her classmates, until a cruel prank at prom pushes her past her breaking point. By the time the night is over, most of Chamberlain is destroyed, and Carrie is dead.

The 1976 movie adaptation also ended with Carrie’s death and Sue Snell’s now-iconic nightmare. Both versions leave little doubt about the damage that can be done when cruelty pushes someone to their limit. Carrie is a victim of the people around her, but she also becomes responsible for the terrible things she does in response. Mike Flanagan’s Carrie takes the story in a different direction.

His version brings in Emaline West, a new character with the ability to astral project, who encourages Carrie to use her powers. And when prom night turns into a disaster, it’s actually Emaline who is responsible. While all of these changes might just seem like a cool way to give the story a new twist, they also alter what Carrie has always been about.

Carrie is no longer responsible for her own revenge

The most unnerving thing about King’s book is that understanding why Carrie snaps doesn’t make her revenge acceptable. And when she turns her powers against the residents of Chamberlain, the people who hurt her aren’t the only ones who suffer. Flanagan spends more time developing Carrie’s relationships before the prom, which makes the events of that night feel crueler.

But when her date is accidentally killed, Carrie has an emotional breakdown instead of turning violent. So Emaline offers to take control of her body to exact revenge on the prom attendees. Using Carrie’s telekinetic powers, Emaline wreaks havoc on the town. That’s a massive change to make in a story that’s always depended on the uncomfortable relationship between suffering and revenge.

In the book and the original adaptation, Carrie isn’t simply a monster. But she isn’t absolved of what she does either. The horror comes from watching a mistreated girl become capable of inflicting suffering on others. By allowing Emaline to carry out the massacre, the series moves the responsibility away from Carrie. While it makes her easier to sympathize with, it also changes the tragedy at the heart of the story.

Emaline gives Carrie an X-Men Vibe

Unlike the book in which Carrie is completely alone, the series introduces Emaline as the kind of friend she needs. She encourages Carrie to stand up for herself and offers an alternative to the isolation imposed on her by her mother. The story eventually reveals that Emaline had been astral projecting herself to Carrie while her physical form was still trying to get to her.

Later, Emaline’s mother and others with supernatural abilities enter the picture, which means that Carrie isn’t the only person with powers. Even though the book hints at a child with special abilities, the series’ references to the shine suggest that Flanagan is connecting Carrie to a wider world, which gives this version of the story a bit of an X-Men vibe.

What’s less clear is whether Emaline actually cares about Carrie or is just doing what she was sent to do. Her offer to help Carrie escape Chamberlain could be genuine, but her saying that she’s been on a mission all along makes it difficult to take their friendship at face value. And with Carrie leaving town with her, there’s probably a lot more to their relationship than meets the eye.

Carrie’s story doesn’t end with her death anymore

Carrie’s story doesn’t end at prom

In both King’s novel and the 1976 film, Carrie dies at the end of the story. It’s a bleak conclusion, but it also gives the whole ordeal a sense of finality. After everything Carrie has endured, there’s no chance for her to escape Chamberlain and start over. The survivors are left to deal with the aftermath, while the audience is left feeling that all of it could have been avoided if people were nicer to Carrie.

Flanagan’s version takes that ending off the table. Carrie survives the destruction of the White home. But with her mother gone and Chamberlain in ruins, Carrie finally has a way out of the life that defined her. But survival isn’t quite the same thing as a happy ending. And the person offering her a fresh start is someone whose motives remain unclear.

Emaline tells Carrie that the world is hers, and Carrie smiles as she leaves with her. Whether that smile signals a newfound sense of freedom or something else is open to interpretation. The ending also leaves the door open for a story that King’s book and the original film never really pursued. Instead of ending with the consequences of Carrie’s powers, the series leaves us wondering what she might do next.
