Shimul Sood / Android Authority
Add Android Authority on Google:
TL;DR
- YouTube Music is working on new animations for playback controls like play, pause, shuffle, repeat, and more.
- The app currently shows static icons for these playback buttons, making this a significant visual overhaul if implemented.
- We’re also seeing animated icons for tools like the sleep timer, which currently lives in the three-dot menu.
We recently reported on a revamped YouTube Music album and playlist interface that gives more prominence to the album artwork, while reorganizing the action bar buttons. But that may not be the extent of the changes coming to the app, as YouTube Music is now prepping a visual overhaul of playback controls in the Now Playing interface.
You’re reading an Authority Insights story. Authority Insights brings you all the latest exclusive reports, app teardowns, leaks, and in-depth tech coverage from the Android Authority team that you won’t find anywhere else.
Looking at version 9.44.52 of YouTube Music, we uncovered several new animation files for commonly used buttons, including play, pause, shuffle, repeat, skip, and several others. The animations while switching between pause and play will also include a neat transition effect, unlike some other animated icons we spotted.
As you can see in the video above, the app could provide dedicated animations for a handful of other buttons, including the podcast-specific keys to jump 30 seconds forward or 10 seconds back. These new buttons would be a significant upgrade over the existing static icons in YouTube Music.
Additionally, we’re seeing an animated sleep timer icon, which is typically hidden in the three-dot menu. However, it’s unclear whether the sleep timer will stay in the three-dot menu or move to the Now Playing interface in a future update.
These are all the animation files that are being refreshed:
Code
advance_back_icon
advance_forward_icon
pause_to_play_icon
play_to_pause_icon
repeat_all_to_one_icon
repeat_off_to_all_icon
repeat_one_to_off_icon
seek_backward_10s_icon
seek_forward_30s_icon
shuffle_activate_icon
shuffle_deactivate_icon
sleep_timer_close_icon
sleep_timer_loop_iconSince we’ve spotted these animated buttons in the app’s code, they’re evidently in the early stages of development. With that in mind, it’s difficult to say when (or if) these animations will be more broadly available in Google’s music streaming app.
As someone who uses YouTube Music frequently, I would prefer a visual change like this, even though the novelty will probably wear off within a few days. For now, this is all we have to share about YouTube Music’s animated icons, but rest assured you’ll be the first to know if we see any further progress on this visual upgrade.
⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
