In an age of ever-expanding technological advancements, science fiction is an even more relevant genre in the entertainment space. For as long as the genre has been around, creative minds have been posing curious “What if?” questions with countless scientific possibilities or fantastical improbabilities. It’s an exploratory genre that manages to pique our interest time and time again. Whether it’s exploring the furthest reaches of the stars or imagining a future where AI turns against humanity (a rather poignant and timely prospect), sci-fi has been thrilling audiences for years.

Unfortunately, streaming services and on-demand options are more costly than they once were. The digital streaming age has given us movies and shows that we can engage with on a whim without the need to step into the mostly extinct video rental stores of yesteryear or buy a copy from Walmart. But with this convenience has come a demand on both our attention and wallets. Subscription services, when stacked on top of one another, add up. On-demand rentals can also be just as expensive, if not more. Thankfully, free streaming services are available that share quality content with the masses. The only caveat is that you must endure commercial breaks. But it’s a small price to pay for otherwise free entertainment. Below is a selection of some of the best sci-fi movies available on free streaming platforms. Any of these movies will make for an enjoyable Sunday afternoon on the couch.

    Donnie Darko (2001)

A cult favorite that poses many intriguing questions

This warped timeline thriller hit theaters in 2001 and failed commercially at the box office. The abysmal audience showing later reversed course during the film’s home release and gained a strong cult following. The film follows teen Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) in the fall of 88 in a suburban town. One night, he mysteriously sleepwalks out of his house moments before a jet engine falls from the sky and crashes into his bedroom. It’s a freak accident that would’ve certainly killed him had he not been a sleep zombie, as it were. He then begins seeing a stranger in a creepy rabbit outfit that feeds him a bizarre armageddon prophecy. That’s as much as I can divulge before treading into real spoiler territory. However, the film heavily deals with time travel, alternate timelines, as well as existential themes and the nature of cause and effect. The movie not only stars Jake Gyllenhaal, but also includes a sizeable cast including Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, and more. You can find this classic on Tubi, Pluto TV, Xumo, and Philo.

    The Terminator (1984)

James Cameron’s killer cyborg thriller still hits

In case you’ve been living under a rock and have never heard of The Terminator, this classic 80s sci-fi film features Arnold Schwarzenneger in the role of a killer cyborg sent back through time to eliminate the mother of John Connor, a man who will one day lead the human resistance against self-aware machines. It’s truly one of the best cyberpunk sci-fi films to come out of the 80s. Director James Cameron is at the top of his game with a cinematic action thriller for the ages. The film would spawn several sequels, one of which being just as iconic as the original (if not more so). However, The Terminator presents scary future in which AI technology has become self-aware and turned against its maker, humanity. The Terminator couldn’t be more timely than the present. You can find this one over on YouTube, Tubi, Pluto TV, and the Roku Channel.

    Arrival (2016)

It’s a sci-fi drama all about the peculiar art of communication

The prospect of extraterrestrial visitors seems more and more like reality the further we travel in our existing timeline. Thankfully, Hollywood has given us countless visions of what that visit might look like, ranging from world-dominating aliens in films like Independence Day to the friendly and quirky telekinetic E.T. But Arrival offers us something entirely different. While a strange alien craft landing on Earth might be concerning simply because of what we don’t know, the more important focus would be learning how to communicate with the visitors before rash decisions are made. It’s a slow-burn that roots itself in an emotional story and explores the nature of linguistics. This is one film that doesn’t rely on flashy action or suspense to engage viewers, but instead harnesses a cerebral sci-fi view of how humanity might seek dialogue while attempting to steady the strike-hard and strike-now mentality of certain worrisome world leaders. The film stars Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, who pair their memorable performances with the striking cinematic vision of the film’s director, Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Dune). If the film interests you, then you can catch it over on Pluto TV.

    The Running Man (1987)

Arnold Schwarzenegger one-lines his way through a futuristic game of survival

Before Edgar Wright’s 2025 take on a Stephen King classic dystopian story starring Glen Powell, there was the 1987 film The Running Man led by none other than 80s action star Arnold Schwarzenneger. While the ’87 movie didn’t have as much in common with the King novel as the recent Edgar Wright version, it had plenty of heart, humor, and wild cyberpunk ideas. The Running Man (1987) focuses on the character Ben Richards, a former police officer who was framed for a massacre. Instead of doing hard time, he finds himself on the set of a popular reality competition show where convicts must compete as “runners” across various arenas and evade celebrity-like “stalkers” who are unleashed by the game show to hunt and kill the convicts. It’s clear that this totalitarian world controls the message to the public in a Hunger Games-esque fashion long before the Hunger Games existed. Of course, this movie is filled with cheeky one-liners and plenty of expected 80s camp. But in all honesty, it only adds to the film’s charm. If you witnessed the Glen Powell-led 2025 version of the film, now is your chance to check out the first adaptation from 1987. You can find it in the Pluto TV library or on YouTube.
