Cybersecurity firm Dragos has released a threat intelligence report detailing an intrusion into a municipal water and drainage utility in Monterrey, Mexico, in which an unidentified threat actor made extensive use of AI tools to assist its operation.  The hacker attack on the water utility took place in January 2026, but was part of a broader campaign targeting multiple Mexican government organizations between December 2025 and February 2026. The campaign was initially uncovered by researchers at Gambit Security, who brought Dragos in specifically to evaluate the threat to industrial control systems (ICS) at the water utility. What distinguished this intrusion…

Over the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, winds can whip around the globe relatively unimpeded by land. Intrepid sailors termed these southern latitudes the Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties, and Screaming Sixties on account of the strong prevailing winds. When those winds encounter a barrier like an island, the disruption in airflow can be beautiful. One impediment, shown here, is remote Peter I Island. This ice-cloaked volcano lies at 68.86 degrees south latitude in the Bellingshausen Sea, some 400 kilometers (250 miles) off the coast of West Antarctica and more than 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) from Cape Horn, Chile. On an austral…

The Iran-linked APT actor MuddyWater has been observed performing an intrusion masquerading as a ransomware attack, Rapid7 reports. As part of the intrusion observed in early 2026, the attackers relied on social engineering for initial access and performed operations typically associated with espionage campaigns, including reconnaissance, credential harvesting, and data theft, but did not deploy file-encrypting ransomware. The threat actors engaged with the victim organization’s employees via Microsoft Teams, establishing screen-sharing sessions for access to users’ assets. This allowed them to steal credentials, manipulate MFA protections, and compromise accounts. “While connected, the TA executed basic discovery commands, accessed files related…

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech SpaceX has been smacked by a one-two punch of lawsuits filed by hundreds of Texas residents accusing the company of damaging their homes from its frequent rocket tests. They accuse SpaceX of negligence, the San Antonio Express-News reports, arguing that the company failed to assess the risks posed by launches of its Starship rocket.  While specific homeowner’s complaints’ aren’t mentioned…

Work on DDR6 memory is already underway, but it’ll be a while before it shows up in your next PC. According to reports, Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron have all begun early development of the next-gen standard. They are quietly kicking off the process years ahead of any real-world launch. Right now, the companies have shared early designs with substrate manufacturers, who are building prototypes and running verification tests. That’s typical for memory development. The groundwork often starts more than two years before anything becomes official. However, it also underlines just how early DDR6 still is. The reason for the push is…

You don’t have to stick to GNOME if you don’t want to. There are plenty of desktop environments, or those close to it, to switch to from GNOME that offer much more freedom. Some people prefer more control and power over what happens on their computers. Just keep in mind that if you’re new, you probably shouldn’t be messing with advanced changes unless you’re okay with bricking your desktop or laptop. KDE Plasma is great for customization You want to have the most control Credit: KDE KDE Plasma is the best choice to switch to if you think GNOME is too…

Bluetooth has been around for a while now, and while it’s always had the same concept — wireless devices that connect to your other devices — it’s improved quite a bit. We’re now on Bluetooth 6.0, but it’ll be a while for it to become fully mainstream, and it’s not uncommon to see 5.4 or even 5.3 be the standard on many devices still. It’s not all bad, though, and I look at it a bit like HDMI 2.2, where it’s better than its predecessor, but it’s still plenty good enough. I wouldn’t be shocked to see people still using…
