    3 storage methods that keep my discs in tip-top shape

    How you choose to store your physical media collection matters more than you might think. It’s important to keep your movies and TV shows organized not only for ease of access, but also to prevent untimely wear and tear. This is particularly true when it comes to optical-based media, which can suffer from such things as scratches and disc rot if not stored in a secure manner.

    There are plenty of different ways to store CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays, all of which have their own set of pros and cons. As ever, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach here — how you store your discs is ultimately a matter of personal preference. In no particular order, then, here are three popular storage methods, along with insights as to why or why not to opt for each one in question.

    Use a disc binder

    You’re probably familiar with the good old-fashioned disc binder. As a storage solution, they were incredibly popular back in the days when CDs ruled the roost, but they can still be readily purchased even in 2026. Disc binders come in a variety of sizes, with some only holding a few discs and others holding upwards of a hundred. On the one hand, a disc binder is a streamlined storage method that reduces clutter. On the other hand, placing discs in a binder means parting ways with disc cases, or keeping said cases and negating the space-saving benefits entirely.

    Once a popular solution, disc racks are a lot less common these days. During their heyday, they were commonly found in home offices, perched next to desktop computers and filled to the brim with CD-ROMs. As a storage solution for optical media, a rack is a solid solution. It allows you to display your album covers and movie box arts with ease, while also remaining fairly accessible for when you want to pop a disc into a reader or player. Some racks even come with wheels, making for a highly convenient and self-contained storage solution worth considering.

    Use a bookshelf

    Last but not least, we can’t forget about standard, run-of-the-mill bookcases. While not the most exciting storage solution out there, bookshelves are ideal for stowing away larger quantities of physical media products, including discs that are placed inside their cover boxes. The benefit of using a bookshelf is that you probably already have access to one, and it can be used for storing and displaying a variety of other items and knickknacks right alongside your discs. With their ubiquity in mind, book cases come in all shapes and sizes, and with different styles to fit individual aesthetic tastes.
