Every week, Netflix puts out hours upon hours of captivating new content, and every weekend, we get to consume it. We’re here to let you know which of the newest Netflix miniseries are worth watching.

    East of Eden

    Netflix presents: literature

This new adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1852 novel is one of Netflix’s biggest releases of the month. Over the course of seven episodes, East of Eden takes us from the latter days of the 19th century to the start of World War I, as the embattled Trask family tries to navigate generational change, internal strife, and the nature of good and evil itself.

As the biggest name in the cast, Florence Pugh is getting a lot of attention. She plays Cathy Ames, a morally bankrupt woman who marries the idealistic farmer Adam Trask (Christopher Abbott). The show is handsomely made, well-acted, and leisurely paced, with Pugh and actor Hoon Lee, who plays Task family retainer Lee, drawing praise from critics.

This new East of Eden miniseries is directed by Zoe Kazan, the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the 1955 movie version of East of Eden starring James Dean. This is one literary adaptation worth watching.

    Mayor of Kingstown: Seasons 1-4

    Taylor Sheridan comes to town

Taylor Sheridan is one of the biggest names in Hollywood right now, having made hit shows like Yellowstone, Landman, Tulsa King, Lioness, and many more. Most of them are on Paramount+, so it’s a big deal that Mayor of Kingstown, one of Sheridan’s most successful shows, is coming to Netflix.

Mayor of Kingstown follows Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner), the head of the influential McLusky family, which keeps peace in the fictional town of Kingstown, Michigan, where the local economy depends on the federal, state, and private prison system. The McLuskys keep the peace between incarcerated criminals, street gangs, prison guards, police, and politicians.

Anyone familiar with Taylor Sheridan’s preoccupation with gritty, melodramatic stories set in lawless environments will be right at home with Mayor of Kingstown. It’s not technically a miniseries, but it’s too bingeable not to mention. A fifth and final season is expected to air on Paramount+ later this year.

    Inside The Circle

    Spanish-language suspense

Inside the Circle, or El Círculo, is one of the many fantastic foreign-language shows produced by Netflix. After a famous actress dies, a journalist goes public with a video that links a government official with her demise. From there, four childhood friends are pulled into a web of lies and blackmail that could put their lives at risk.

Inside the Circle is based on the 2014 novel Los corruptores by Jorge Zepeda Patterson, so it’s also a literary adaptation, albeit not one as well-known as East of Eden. If you want a taut political thriller, this is the perfect option.

Characters from Paradise, Pluribus, and Lanterns.

The best new sci-fi shows worth watching right now

    Take Charge of My Heart

    Available to stream October 9

Take Charge of my Heart is a Korean romantic drama about Baek Ho-rang (Kim Young-kwang), the wealthy heir of a resort empire. Ho-rang has a secret: he has a battery-powered artificial heart, and it’s failing.

Enter Na Bo-bae (Chae Soo-bin), a romance author who was struck by lightning as a child. She has electricity coursing through her body and shocks anyone she touches, making romantic contact all but impossible.

But it’s possible for Ho-rang; in fact, being in contact with Bo-bae recharges his heart. He hires her for practical reasons, but soon enough, romance blooms.

The premise for this series sounds vaguely ridiculous, but there’s no reason to let plausibility get in the way of a good romance.

    100 Days of Deception

Available to stream on October 10

Set in South Korea during Japanese occupation in 1932, 100 Days of Deception follows Lee Ga-kyung (Kim You-jung), a pickpocket who takes a job as an interpreter at the Japanese Government-General of Korea in hopes of starting a new life. She and Kim Tae-woong (Park Jin-young), another interpreter, get entangled in the complications of the colonial government.

100 Days of Deception is a historical political thriller that looks more substantial than the somewhat silly Take Charge of my Heart, although both look like a good time.

Even more to watch on Netflix

There’s always more new stuff to check out on Netflix, even if not all of it meets the “miniseries” criteria:

    • All American Season 8: The eighth and final season of this long-running sports drama is now available to stream on Netflix, complete with the first seven seasons.
    • Love Village Season 3: This Japanese reality follows several singles from the ages of 35 to 60 as they live in a house at the base of Mt. Fugi together, hoping to find their life partner.
    • Is It Cake? Halloween Season 2: Bakers create cakes that don’t look like cakes, and it’s up to the contestants to spot the differences. This Halloween-themed seasons drops on October 9.
    • Haunted Hotel Season 2: Continuing the spooky theme, the second season of this animated sitcom drops on October 9.
    • Animals: Ben Affleck directs and stars in this political thriller about a mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped.

    Binge well and responsibly.
