Microsoft announced on Tuesday that it has disrupted a cybercrime service that has been helping threat actors distribute ransomware and other malware. According to the tech giant, a threat actor it has named Fox Tempest has been running a malware-signing-as-a-service (MSaaS) that abuses Microsoft Artifact Signing to generate short-lived code-signing certificates. The certificates are used to sign malware disguised as legitimate software, helping it evade detection. “Fox Tempest has created over a thousand certificates and established hundreds of Azure tenants and subscriptions to support its operations. Microsoft has revoked over one thousand code signing certificates attributed to Fox Tempest,” the…
Hydrogen gas produced by geological processes beneath Earth’s surface has been touted as a promising clean energy source. A new study provides the first solid evidence that it could be a practical and commercially viable option for decarbonizing the grid.Hydrogen is an energy-dense fuel that produces only water when burned. But today, the vast majority of industrial hydrogen is manufactured using fossil fuels in an energy intensive process, negating its green credentials. While there’s hope renewable energy could one day power the process and provide a reliable source of green hydrogen, that technology is still a long way from commercial…

Vulnerability exploitation was the most common access vector for data breaches in 2025, the latest installment of Verizon’s annual Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) shows. The number of analyzed security incidents has increased to 31,000. Of these, more than 22,000 were confirmed breaches, nearly double compared to last year’s 12,195 confirmed breaches. Approximately 31% of the breaches were the result of unpatched vulnerabilities being exploited. Credential abuse, which was the top entry point in last year’s DBIR, accounted for 13% of the breaches. According to Verizon’s researchers, threat actors are leveraging AI to accelerate vulnerability exploitation, and the window for…
Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech A lot goes into getting that warm pizza to your doorstep. Dough is kneaded, toppings are sprinkled, ovens are fired up, and cars hit the road. Did we mention there’s an AI pulling all the strings? That’s the case at Pizza Hut, at least, and not everyone’s happy about it. One of the pie-slinging chain’s largest franchisees in the country is suing the parent company over its mandatory deployment of an AI-powered kitchen management and delivery system that’s been so disastrous that it’s…
There is a particular kind of frustration that comes with owning a speaker that sounds genuinely brilliant indoors but cannot follow you outside without the quality falling off a cliff the moment you unplug it. Most portable speakers solve the portability problem by quietly compromising on the thing that made you want a good speaker in the first place, leaving you with something that is fine for a garden or a weekend away but never quite sounds like it means it. I never buy into a single device or software ecosystem. It’s partly an occupational hazard, because I need to stay familiar with every brand and operating system. It’s also because I want to try the bleeding edge of tech, regardless of the logo on the back of a product. That means I’m using iOS and Android daily, as well as macOS and Windows. It’s usually a headache, but there’s one area where I can mix-and-match gadgets without worrying about interoperability problems — my smart home. A decade ago, it wasn’t that simple. I had certain smart home gadgets in the…
